First edition, complete in two volumes and in very good condition. Sir Harry Johnston was the former special commissioner for Uganda and provides a comprehensive and informative survey of the colony in the late nineteenth century. The books combined, include 506 b&w illustrations, most are after photographs, 48 coloured plates and 9 foldout colour maps. Externally, publisher’s original black cloth boards with a portrait of a native Ugandan head in gilt on upper board and gilt lettering to spine. Gilt to upper page edges. Board corners are turned, with minor wear to the extremities. Volume 2 spine shows a small tear at the top. Both volumes are tightly bound. Internally, both books have front end pastedowns indicating ownership of Henry Johnston Younger. Minor foxing on some pages of both volumes but pages are generally clean and bright. Outer page edges show some foxing, as can be seen when books are closed. Please see photos provided as these serve to reflect the condition in conjunction with details provided. Combined book weight is 5kg with packaging, a heavy set, and additional postage costs will apply.
