Rare, first edition, hardback, in good condition. An early history of Pietermaritzburg by one of the Natal Colony's most adventurous pioneers. Externally, publisher's original red cloth covered boards, black lettering on front board and spine. Some wear to the extremities and a few faint marks on boards. Some fraying and shelf wear to the top and bottom of the spine. The binding is tight. Internally there is a tear to the cover page with some foxing to cover and title pages. One page (xv) of the Index to Advertisements is loose.  Else the other pages are clean and bright with numerous photographs and illustrations of the time. From page 196 there are a number of advertisements for local businesses and schools. A scarce copy.
