Rare, first edition, hardcover in good plus condition. First published in 1899, this book was reprinted in 1971 due to demand for copies of this valuable book on early Durban history, which had long been out of print and very scarce. There is a fold-out chart of the Port of Natal and various illustrations. Professionally rebound in sympathetic red boards with original illustrated covers (natives building hut) and slightly rubbed backstrip, re-laid. Now tightly bound and well preserved. Internally, some foxing to the text and edges and a few tiny worm holes (since treated) to the first few pages. Minor foxing on some pages throughout but overall, pages are generally clean and bright. At the back of the book there is a clipping from a newspaper showing the obituary of Mr William Leathern that has been pasted.
