First edition, hardcover, in very good condition. The sequel to King Solomon's Mines, 1887, following Quartermain's desires to get back into the wilderness after the death of his only son. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece and nineteen plates, all complete. Written by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, an English writer of adventure fiction romances, set in exotic locations and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. Illustrated by Charles Henry Malcolm Kerr, a British portrait, genre, landscape painter and illustrator. Engraved on wood by James Cooper, an English wood-engraver, draughtsman, illustrator, and organist. Externally, publisher's original full cloth binding with gilt stamped cover and spine. Minor wear to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Very small splits in the cloth at the head of the spine. Binding is firm. Internally, pages are bright with the odd spot or handling mark and light age toning to the extremities.
